LIVING, LEARNING, LAUGHING
Our aims at Excel in life CIC

Our motto is “Living, Learning, Laughing” and Excel in life is one of the most positive, happy places to come and learn skills, make friends, and express yourselves freely.
We deliver the vocational area of Hair & Beauty together with the ASDAN Personal Development Programmes as well as the Living Independently programme. Our classes are small, providing a high teacher/learner ratio. We offer tailored courses which are student-led to achieve optimum results. Our courses are portfolio-based with no time limit on achievement.
We build confidence and self-esteem as well as facilitating awareness of personal presentation. All of this is delivered in a safe, comfortable environment with friendly, approachable teachers. Our centre has a fully-equipped salon providing a realistic working environment.

MEET TEAM EXCEL

TRINA ELLAM
I have been in the hairdressing industry for almost 40 years, and for 20 of those years I ran my own salons. I am also a fully qualified practitioner and teacher in this sector. You will get the benefit of a lifetime’s experience in this field, and so be assured you are learning in safe, knowledgeable hands.
My aim is to train you so that you too can take up a successful career in the hairdressing and beauty industry.
I have a desire and passion to support others and pass on my knowledge and experience to those who need bespoke and specialist training to help them succeed and achieve.

JULIE VICKERSTAFFE

STUART HILL
Hi, my name is Stuart Hill and I am a graphic designer.
In 2016 I was leaving a charity and so at that moment and had no place to see clients. Trina, and her sister, Julie, who I had created a flyer for, kindly offered me office space upstairs at their centre. We have since become good friends.
I became acquainted with the students and realised that I could teach one of them some basic IT skills. This lead to a permanent position at Excel In Life as Creative Director.
I love my time here, everyday is different. We pack each day with activities and there is always a great vibe.

MATTHEW BAKER

JULIE WHALLEY
I’m Julie Whalley and I qualified as a Business Studies teacher almost 30 years ago and 16 years ago I retrained to teach Maths.
I have worked with many learners over the years from different backgrounds and with varying abilities from pre-entry to A Level.
I love working at Excel in life because as a team we all share the same philosophy of wanting to provide a service that is inclusive to all.
It's very satisfying supporting and teaching people, and seeing them progress and gain confidence in their numeracy, social and personal skills.

LYNN PEVITT
I have been a support worker for Wigan Council for most of my career. More recently I've worked for a day centre with the same essential duties of care as Excel and this has allowed a smooth transition from there to Excel in life CIC.
I started at Excel in life CIC as a student and volunteered for one day each week, for three months. I did so well that they accepted me on the Government's Kickstart programme lasting 6 months.
As I gained more confidence and became more familiar with the way Excel in life CIC work on a day-to-day basis, I became aware of the responsibility level undertaken by each staff member.
I have since been taken on as an apprentice and have been in this role now since 2022.
I was introduced to Excel in life CIC by my daughter Hannah who is a student here.
I was so inspired by all that Julie, Trina and Stuart do for their students that I was thrilled to bits when an opportunity became available for me to work with them.
I trained as a hairdresser many years ago and I love arts and crafts. Excel in life CIC gives me a chance to pass on these skills to the students.
